I have no empirical data on the “straightness” of any field or, for that matter, the people working in it, and I don’t think my speculation is any better than yours.
Yes, there are many openly LGBT+ people in linguistics, but I don’t know whether their proportion in linguistics is higher than that in the total population.
At some conference, almost 20 years ago, I overheard linguists speculating that the seemingly high proportion of gay men among the few men studying linguistics* was due to the fact that linguistics was a “soft” subject and hence something feminine, not a “hard science” or maybe due to the fact that “female brains” were better at language skills. Such ideas are, of course, sexist bullshit and should be discarded.
*) the ratio has long been shifted towards the female end of the spectrum, at least for students; with faculty, it used to be reversed but it’s getting more balanced nowadays
